Frequently
Asked Questions
Q:
Will Emory match my donation?
A:
Emory
University, as a tax exempt entity itself, does not match donations
made by its employees to charity. As a matter of fact, most non-profits
don't match employee charitable gifts. Matching gifts are traditionally
offered by corporations and for profit businesses.
Q: Do I receive a copy of my donation form?
A: Yes!
After completing the donation form and making your check payable to
one of the 7 charitable partners, you should make a copy
for your files.
Q: Under Emory Community Giving,
can I give to any nonprofit group?
A: No,
the nonprofit groups that you can support through Emory
Community Giving are American Heart Association Heart Walk, Community Health Charities of Georgia,
Earth Share of Georgia, Georgia Black United Fund, Georgia Shares, Global
Impact, and the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and their 452 member
agencies.
Q: How were these charities chosen?
A:
United
Way of Metro Atlanta has been a partner for many years and the other
federations lobbied Emory for inclusion in the campaign for several
years, and were recommended to the President's Cabinet by the Employee
Council and the University Senate. Emory has reviewed each charitable
federation to ensure that they meet certain key performance criteria.
Each federation has certified to Emory that each of their member agencies
are legitimate non-profit organizations.
Q: How can I get more information about the
charitable partners and their members?
A: Brief
profiles on the seven 2010 charitable partners and direct links to their
websites are provided here
. Although the size,
number of member agencies, resources, and focus of these charitable
partners vary widely, each charitable partner has been reviewed by Emory
University and is in good standing on key performance criteria. Each
charitable partner has certified to Emory that each of their member
agencies is also in good standing and has the necessary credentials
to operate as a legitimate nonprofit group.
Q: What is the difference between giving to
the "community fund" of a charitable partner and giving directly to
one of its member agencies?
A: Funds
given to any of the seven charitable federations are combined and divided
among the member agencies of the federation partner. Funds designated
for a specific member agency are given to that agency minus any applicable
administrative fees.
Q: To which group do I make my check payable?
A: Checks
should be made payable to one of the seven charitable federations only,
NOT to Emory University, Emory Community
Giving or Emory Healthcare. The charitable federations are American Heart Association Heart Walk, Community
Health Charities of Georgia, Earth Share of Georgia, Georgia Black United
Fund, Georgia Shares, Global Impact, and United Way of Metropolitan
Atlanta.
Q: Can I make a donation directly to a member
agency?
A: Yes,
you can make a contribution to any of the 452 member agencies
of the 2010 Emory Community Giving
charitable partners. Simply identify the code number for the agency
that you wish to support and put that code number, along with the amount
of your contribution, on the donation form.
Q: Can I write my check directly to a member
agency of one of the seven charitable partners in Emory Community
Giving?
A: No.
checks should be made payable to one of the seven charitable partners
-- American Heart Association Heart Walk, Community Health Charities, Earth Share of Georgia, Georgia Black
United Fund, Georgia Shares, Global Impact, and Metro Atlanta United
Way ONLY -- who will send your donation to the member agency you have
identified on your donation form. DO NOT make checks payable to individual
member agencies of the seven charitable federations.
Q: How much does one have to give before a
charity is required to give a receipt?
A: The
law requires a charity to issue a written receipt indicating
that no goods or services were received in exchange for the gift if
the gift is $250 or more given at one time. You may request a
receipt for a gift of any amount by completing the information at the
bottom of the donation form.
Q: Will my Social Security number be shared
outside Emory?
A: No,
Social Security information on any Emory employee will not be shared
outside Emory. Payroll departments prefer that all employees use the
employee ID number found on their payroll checks instead of Social Security
numbers. If the employee ID number is unknown, Social Security numbers
can be used.
Q: Can I stop a payroll-deduction contribution
during the year?
A: Yes, any employee may stop an Emory Community
Giving payroll deduction by contacting his or her Payroll Office
and requesting that the payroll deduction be stopped.
Q: If I leave Emory, what happens to my payroll
deduction?
A: If
your donation is deducted from your paycheck, then when you terminate
employment, the deduction automatically will stop.
